God made rainy days so gardeners could get the housework done.

A lonely hibiscus …

“But now in September the garden has cooled, and with it my possessiveness.  The sun warms my back instead of beating on my head … The harvest has dwindled, and I have grown apart from the intense midsummer relationship that brought it on.”
-  Robert Finch

I’m kind of feeling the same way today, after spending a few hours harvesting the last of my potatoes (half of which were dinner), along with several pounds of runner beans and my onions.   I figured out what my mystery plant is.   I dug them up and it appears this is garlic so I am going to save and plant them.

I’ve decided that I want a Ginkgo tree.  I was given a seedling this spring but I lost it so I’ll be on the lookout for more seeds soon.  I don’t know where I’m going to put it mind you.  Mom, do you think it would fit where that dying Maple is?

A Spring day in my garden

I know, I know, it’s not officially spring but it sure feels like it here on the West Coast.

Having only moved here in the fall, I discover something new every time I take a walk around my garden. Enjoy these pictures that were taken just this weekend:

In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt. ~ Margaret Atwood

Fall Blooms in Halfmoon Bay

It’s been a few months since I’ve had the opportunity to participate in GTS. This afternoon I took a wander around the new garden and took some shots to share. I really need to get out and do some more cleaning up but that will have to wait for another day.

I have no idea what this is but I just adore the vibrant colours:

*This has since been identified as a Winged Spindle (Euonymus alatus). The ‘winged’ refers to the ridges of bark on the stems, these can become quite prominent with age.   Thanks to the UBC Botanical Garden forums for help identifying this for me.

My last apple. I discovered from a neighbour that this is a grafted apple tree so it will be interesting to see all the different varieties next year:

Albizia julibrissin or commonly known as a silk tree or commonly mis-named ‘mimosa’:

‘Bittersweet October. The mellow, messy, leaf-kicking, perfect pause between the opposing miseries of summer and winter.’

~ Carol Bishop Hipps

The great seed kafuffle …

There is a garden in every childhood, an enchanted place where colors are brighter, the air softer, and the morning more fragrant than ever again.  ~ Elizabeth Lawrence

My three year old daughter got hold of some seed packets today and mixed them all together in a bucket.   I’m just wondering what to do with my new mesclin / various flower mix???

Saturday …

Why are husbands like lawn mowers?

They are difficult to get started, emit foul smells and don’t work half the time ~ Author unknown

I didn’t get nearly as much accomplished today as I had planned due to a partially absent husband / heavy item mover / child entertainer.

Our next door neighbours have their house for sale, and I excitedly accepted their kind offer of two peony plants from the garden bed adjacent to our yard. So I dug them up, split them and transplanted them. After doing some reading, I realize that spring is not the best time to do this, but I had to get it done before the open house tomorrow. Am I right not to expect any miracles with the blooms this year?

I also planted some poppy seeds, or rather, my three year old daughter did. It will be interesting to see where in the garden the poppies decide to sprout!

Quote of the day

Gardening is a matter of your enthusiasm holding up until your back gets used to it ~ Authour unknown

Timely, as this week I can barely move.

Weeds are flowers too …

Weeds are flowers too, once you get to know them ~ A.A.Milne, Eeyore from Winnie The Poo.

So, I’m just kind of wondering how I’m going to organize this blog. Seeing as it’s a record of my garden, I might go year by year including photos and lists of what I’ve planted. I’m a rather amature gardener with lots to learn, so I’m also going to try and research one plant a week.

Gardening is a kind of disease …

It infects you, you cannot escape it. When you go visiting, your eyes rove about the garden; you interrupt the serious cocktail drinking because of an irresistible impulse to get up and pull a weed. ~ Lewis Gannit

Welcome.

I’ve kept a diary of my modest little garden for the past five years but I’ve decided it’s time to go high-tech and start a blog so I can better keep track of my information.

I’m not entirely sure about this template but it’s one of the few available with a custom photo header.

I’d love to chat, but I have two more trees that need planting today!
